Bill founded GV in 2009 and oversees all of the fund’s global activities. GV is one of the most active investors in the world, with approximately $2 billion under management, 300 portfolio companies, and offices in Mountain View, San Francisco, Boston, New York, and London. Investments include pioneers like Uber, Nest, DocuSign, Cloudera, Flatiron Health, and Foundation Medicine. Bill has had an interest in next-generation life sciences and artificial intelligence for some time. He studied neuroscience at Middlebury College and conducted neurobiology research at Duke University. Bill advised MacArthur Award winner David Green and Aurolab on the development of a novel hydrophobic acrylic lens for cataract blindness that has been used in more than 22 million patients in the developing world. He was also instrumental in the formation of Google’s Calico project. Bill previously worked in biotechnology portfolio management for Swedish investment firm Investor AB and founded and sold web-hosting pioneer Burlee.com. Bill has been named one of the most creative people in business by Fast Company and to the New Establishment list by Vanity Fair.
